FAIZABAD, Afghanistan, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Afghan security forces, following counter-offensive and fierce fighting, have evicted Taliban militants and recaptured Kohistan district in the northern Badakhshan province, provincial police spokesman Sanaullah Rohani said Sunday.
"The security forces after killing 10 Taliban rebels and injuring five others were able to recapture Kohistan district, forcing militants to flee the area on Saturday night," Rohani told Xinhua.
Taliban militants overrun the strategically important Kohistan district on Thursday night.
Taliban militants haven't commented on losing the important district.
However, some people in the restive district have said that fighting is still continuing between security forces and Taliban fighters around the district headquarters.
Without hinting at possible casualties of security forces, the official said that the security forces would continue to target militants elsewhere in Kohistan district to ensure lasting peace there.
