FAIZABAD, Afghanistan, July 15 (Xinhua) -- At least 14 militants have been killed and 16 others injured as Taliban militants stormed government security checkpoints in northern Badakhshan province on Saturday, the provincial governor's spokesman said Sunday.
"Clashes between Taliban and the government forces erupted in Zebak district on Saturday morning and so far 14 rebels have been killed and 16 others injured," Nik Mohammad Nazari told Xinhua.
Without providing more details, the official said that "more troops have been sent to the area to defend government positions," adding the militants would soon be diminished in Zebak and adjoining areas.
Taliban militants, who are in control of parts of Badakhshan province, have not commented on the report.
