OSLO, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Greenland's Prime Minister Mute Egede on Monday said that the island is not for sale, in response to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's comments concerning the island.
Trump posted earlier on social media that U.S. ownership of Greenland is essential. He had made similar comments in 2019 during his first term as U.S. president.
"We are not for sale and will never be for sale," Egede declared in a written statement to Danish broadcaster DR, adding, "Greenland is ours. We must not lose our years-long fight for freedom."
While rejecting any notion of U.S. ownership, Egede emphasized Greenland's willingness to collaborate with international partners, including the United States.
In a written comment sent by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's Office to DR, it is stated that they have no comments "other than referring to what (Greenland's Prime Minister Mute Egede) has stated that Greenland is not for sale, but open to cooperation." ■
