HANOI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam beat Malaysia 2-0 in a Group A game of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Championship here on Friday.
Vietnam scored the goals in the 11th and 60th minutes during the match at the My Dinh National Stadium, where Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and top legislator Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan attended, together with tens of thousands of fans.
"Today, I am very pleased about the way our team played and won. We have overcome the biggest obstacle, winning three points and no players have been injured. That is great," Vietnam's coach Park Hang-Seo said at a press briefing after the match.
The South Korean coach has called up 15 players from the team that reached the final of the Asian Under-23 Championships in China in January.
After the victory, thousands of Vietnamese fans took to the streets to cheer.
Vietnam whitewashed Laos 3-0 in their opener on Nov. 8 and will clash Myanmar on Nov. 20 to decide the group winners.
The tip two teams of the two groups will advance to the semifinals.
The biennial tournament is to run from Nov. 8 to Dec. 15 with the winners walking away with 300,000 U.S. dollars. Enditem
